Norse Roll on the Road

Emma Rutter releases a three in front of the Bay bench as a defender closes out

ALPENA, MI – The Bay College Women's Basketball Team (18-7, 10-0 MCCAA) rolled to an 82-37 victory against the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks (6-15, 4-6 MCCAA) during the midweek conference tilt.  It continued a steak of 14 straight victories for the Norse.

The Norse started to pull away early with an 8-0 run in the first period, but Alpena responded and made the score 12-7 after the first ten minutes of play.

Bay dominated the second period, putting the game out of reach for the Lumberjacks.  The Norse outscored their host 26-5 during that period by shooting 50.0% from the floor during that timeframe and creating ten turnovers while grabbing seven offensive rebounds in the second quarter.  Meanwhile Alpena shot a paltry 18.2%, hitting on just one of their six three-point attempts in the second.  The two teams would go into intermission with Bay leading by a score of 38-12.

With the game well in hand, the Norse continued to dominate the defensive end, frustrating the Lumberjack offense.  Bay stretched their lead to 48 late in the fourth quarter, and ended with a 45-point margin.

Alpena turned the ball over 45 times in the contest and shot just 29.3% for the game.  Bay outrebounded their hosts 40-32 but gained an even bigger advantage with 22 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end.  The Norse had an up-and-down shooting night, hitting over 50% of their shots in the second and fourth quarters, but ended the game with a 38.9% conversion rate from the field.  The road team got to the free throw line 27 times, but only made 13 of those attempts.

Emma Rutter (SO, Chatham, MI) had the hot hand for the Norse, hitting five of ten from behind the three-point arc and ending up with 23 points.  She also grabbed six rebounds and had eight steals.  Kennedy Sproule (FR, Winnipeg, MB) was three of six from three, and ended with a double-double, picking up 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Ashlee Burchette (FR, Minneapolis, MN) added 16 points.

Emily Jackson (FR, Saginaw, MI) led the Lumberjacks with 12 points.  Makayla Kamyszek (SO, Posen, MI) and Paige Wooden (SO, Stockbridge, MI) each grabbed seven rebounds.

The Norse still hold just a one-game lead over Mid Michigan in the MCCAA Northern Conference standings after the Lakers defeated Delta College 89-47.

Bay will host Muskegon Community College on Saturday at 1 pm.  The two teams had a tough battle back on January 20 with the Norse stealing an 80-73 victory on the road.  Saturday's games will be an Alumni Game and all Bay College alumni are invited to attend and be recognized.
