On April 19, 2023, Bay College Athletic Director Matt Johnson has announced the hiring of Stephenson native Scott Carhoun as the Head Cross Country Coach.

"We are thrilled to have Scott on board to lead our Cross Country Program," Johnson said. "Scott’s energy and passion for coaching was evident in the interview process.  He brings with him a variety of experiences and demonstrated success at the collegiate level. I am confident his leadership and the implementation of his vision will make an immediate impact on the program and I look forward to watching him move the program forward."

Coach Carhoun has spent over 14 years in the cross/track and field coaching role.  His most recent experience comes as the owner/operator of Track Star USA, an online training service for track and field athletes.  The service provides video analysis, training programs, and coaching services for athletes and coaches.  Through Track Star USA Carhoun has helped guide Masters aged athletes to national records at USA Track and Field Masters Championships and National Senior Games.

Scott boasts nine years of experience at the high school level.  He was an Assistant Girl’s Track and Field/Cross Country Coach for Menominee High School from 2011 to 2017, and held the same role at Stephenson High School from 2007 to 2009. During that time he aided in the development of two U.P. Finals Championship teams, two U.P. Finals Runner Up Teams, and 15 U.P. individual champions.

Carhoun also has had various stints at the collegiate level.  From 2009 to 2010 he was an assistant with Lake Superior State’s Track and Field Team where he worked with sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers.  He was also with Northern Michigan University from 2003 to 2007.  In 2003 he was a student assistant with the Women’s Track and Field Team and was a part of reinstating the program back to Wildcat Athletics.  In 2004 he continued that trailblazing spirit by founding an NMU Men’s Track and Field Club team that provided a varsity-level program for ten to 20 athletes.

As an athlete, Scott spent one year with the Ferris State University Track and Field Team and was just short of qualifying for Nationals.  He was named the team’s Most Valuable Athlete in that season.  Prior to that he was a track and field and cross country athlete for Stephenson High School.  He was named All-U.P. three times, All-State twice, and Dream Team one time as a cross country runner.  In track and field he was named All-State twice and was a U.P. Champion in 1998.

“I really enjoy getting the best bang for my buck, and Bay College certainly fits that mold,” said Carhoun.  “I truly feel blessed to be in the position that I am in.  Bay College gives me the unique opportunity to help young athletes enjoy the beauty of the Upper Peninsula.  And not only that, they will be able to afford their education and benefit from world class coaching in the process.”

Coach Carhoun is a certified coach through USA-Weightlifting, the US Track and Field Academy, and the USA-Track and Field Organization, and has a degree in Physical Education and Health.  He resides in Stephenson with his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Scottie.
