Cretens comes to Bay with a wide array of experiences that include stops at every level of collegiate men's basketball. Most recently, he spent time at Trine University as their assistant men’s basketball coach/JV head coach. Coach Cretens also had a brief stop at his alma mater, Gladstone High School, as their varsity boys’ basketball coach.

Prior to Gladstone, Mike spent two seasons at William Woods University as graduate assistant men's basketball coach. He played an integral part in defensive game plans and player development that led to 12 All-Conference awards, including the two-time Defensive Player of Year.

Coach Cretens also spent time at Tusculum University and Mississippi State University. As the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Tusculum, he was responsible for six NCAA DII athletic teams. At Mississippi State, he had the opportunity to work closely with the NCAA tournament team that produced six professional basketball players.

Cretens' basketball career started as a player at Gogebic Community College, and later continued at Finlandia University before making the transition into coaching. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science at Northern Michigan University and earned his Master of Education degree at William Woods.
