Matt Johnson was named Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach at Bay College in June, 2016.  In six seasons at Bay he has guided the Norse to an impressive 112-60 record including a perfect 14-0 record in Bay’s inaugural year in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA).

In the 2022-23 season, Johnson led the Norse to a 26 win season, MCCAA Northern Division title, and a runner-finish in the Region XII B Championship. The Norse ended the season ranked #20 in the NJCAA DII poll, the first ranking in school history. Along with winning MCCAA Coach of the Year honors and the BCAM Junior College Coach of the Year award, Tyrel Creger was named MCCAA Northern Division Defensive Player of the Year, Freshmen of the Year, All-MCCAA 1st Team, and All-Region XII, Lamar Grayson was named All-MCCAA 1st Team and All-Region XII, Genesis Kemp and Colin Hudson were both named All-MCCAA 2nd team and MCCAA All-Freshmen team, Justin Nelson and Jaylen Flaniken were both named All-MCCAA 3rd team and Nelson was named MCCAA All-Defensive team.

Prior to arriving at Bay, Johnson was the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota. In his one season at Saint Mary’s, Johnson coached a 1,000 point scorer, and recruited an incoming class that, as freshmen, won more games than any SMU team in 6 seasons.

Prior to his time at Saint Mary’s, Johnson was an assistant coach for one season (2006-07), before being named the Head Men’s Coach in 2007 at Hibbing Community College, in Hibbing, Minnesota.  He led the Cardinals from 2007 to 2014. In his seven seasons at the helm, Johnson’s teams had a record of 96-100, a big improvement over the 43-111 record in the six seasons prior to his arrival. While competing in the difficult Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC), considered one of the premier NJCAA DIII conferences in the country, the Cardinals had a 51-44 in-conference record. Johnson's teams qualified for the 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 MCAC Conference and NJCAA Region XIII Tournament, knocked off the #2 and #5 teams in the nation, had 14 All-MCAC performers and 5 NJCAA All-Region XIII players, and had 22 student-athletes who moved on to 4 year schools, 15 on athletic scholarships.

Coach Johnson’s coaching career began as an Assistant Women’s Coach at Macalester College, in St. Paul, Minnesota (2005-2006).

Johnson played college basketball at Northland College and Finlandia University and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2004.

Matt and his wife, Kate, reside in Gladstone. They have two children, Drake (18) and Lillie (16).
