Norse Win Big In Home Classic

Baril Mawo about to release a layup attempt right at the rim

ESCANABA, MI – Bay College's Men's Basketball Team (10-1) hosted their annual holiday classic tournament and cruised to a pair of victories.  On Friday they beat Western Technical College (5-5) by a score of 108-58.  They followed that up with a 108-59 win over the Gogebic Community College Samsons (2-7) the following afternoon.

The Norse started the game with a 12-3 run and never looked back.  Bay quickly made it a double-digit lead and the Cavaliers seemed to be overwhelmed.  The Norse shot 63.9% from the field in the first half, including four of eight from three-point.  They also converted 12 of 15 free throw attempts in the first half while their lead ballooned.  Bay led 62-25 at the half.

The Norse continued to pull away in the second half.  They would send all 16 of their available players out on the floor for significant minutes with 14 of them figuring into the point total.  In the end the Norse were just too much for Western Tech, and ended up with a 50-point win.

Bay shot 57.7% for the game and outrebounded the Cavaliers 52-25.

Terrell Galbreath (FR, Indianapolis, IN) led the Norse with 13 points.  Baril Mawo (SO, Manchester, NH) put up 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Joshua Ofori (FR, Shakopee, MN) also had 12 points and pulled in seven rebounds.  Genesis Kemp (SO, Grand Rapids, MI) and Kairee Gadson (FR, Rochester, MN) each had 11 points.

Evan Matthews (FR, Wisconsin Rapids, WI) led the Cavaliers with 13 points.

On Saturday the Norse traded the lead with the Samsons in the opening possessions, but a 22-2 run took away any thoughts of the game being close.  The Norse were dominating early on and once again were efficient.  They tallied a 59.1% field goal percentage in the first half and went eight of 17 from three-point.  Bay turned the ball over just two times in that timeframe, scoring 62 points in the first half.  Gogebic's solid 41.4% shooting was not nearly enough to keep pace, as they scored 32 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

Once again, the Norse were able to comfortably runaway with this game in the second half.  They were able to bury the Samsons on their way to a 49-point victory.

Seventeen players stepped on the floor for Bay, 14 of them scored.  Bay ended the game shooting 58.7% from the floor and 40.9% from three.  They outrebounded their opponents 48-22.

Mawo was fantastic as he ended up with 25 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in just 20 minutes of play.  Kemp picked up 12 points and four rebounds, while Gadson added 12 points and three assists.  Nic Williams (FR, La Crosse, WI) picked up 11 points and three assists and Ryan Sweeney (FR, Green Bay, WI) added ten points and four rebounds.

Jaden Borseth (SO, Bruce Crossing, MI) was eight of 13 from the field for 24 points for Gogebic.  Eli Talsma (FR, Hurley, WI) had 16 points and six rebounds.

The Norse will take a short break before picking up action on December 29 against Madison College at 4:30 pm.  They will finish that weekend with a game against the College of DuPage on Saturday, December 30 at 2:30 pm.  Both of those games will be played at Just a Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells, WI.
