Norse Fall After Strong Start to Weekend

Leah Allan digs a ball as Abigail Rexford looks on

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Norse Volleyball Team (5-5) started off their weekend strong with a  sweep of Elgin Community College, but Milwaukee Area Tech was able to defend their home court with a 3-1 victory.  On Saturday Bryant and Stratton (WI) picked up their first win of the season with 3-0 sweep.

Bay was able to pick up their second win of the season over Elgin (0-11) on Friday afternoon in a triangular hosted by MATC.  Olyvia Saxton (FR, Ithaca, MI) picked up four kills in the opening set, leading the Norse to a 25-21 victory to set the tone.  Bay flexed their defensive muscle in the second set, picking up 33 digs and won by a score of 25-20.  Despite putting together their worst attack of the match Bay was able to cruise to a 25-16 victory in the final set.

Kylee Tadisch (SO, Coleman, WI) tallied seven kills.  Tori Jandt (SO, Peshtigo, WI) picked up 23 digs, while Amber Caylor (SO, Wausaukee, WI) ended with 15 assists and ten digs.  Madison Johnson (FR, Florence, WI) added ten assists.

In the second match of the day the Norse found themselves in a tough battle early on.  Bay put together their best attack of the day in the first set with nine kills and three errors for a .286 percentage, but still dropped the set 25-21 to Milwaukee Area Technical College (7-5).  In the second set the Norse committed just two attack errors while picking up six serving aces, three from Tianna Taylor (SO, Gwinn, MI), two from Leah Allan (SO, Oconto, WI), and one from Caylor.  Bay won that set 25-22.  It went downhill in the third set however, as the Norse recorded a negative attack percentage and dropped the set 25-12.  Despite picking up the pace offensively, Bay lost in the final set 25-20.

Tadisch picked up seven kills with no errors to lead the offensive effort again.  Piper Monroe (FR, Menominee, MI) and Saxton each had six kills.  Caylor had 12 assists while Jandt picked up 23 digs.

On Saturday the Norse faced a Bryant and Stratton (WI) (1-5) team looking for their first win and a sloppy first set by the Norse set them up with the momentum to do so.  A negative attack percentage, three serving errors, and two ball handling errors were just too much to overcome for the road team, and they were only able to put up a measly nine points in the first set.  The Norse regrouped in set two and gave the Bobcats a challenge.  While the offense collected twice as many kills as they did the first set and committed only two attack errors, two serving errors, five receiving errors, and two more ball handling errors were too much to overcome, and Bryant and Stratton took the second set 25-21.  The Norse never really cleaned it up as seven attack errors and three ball handling errors in the third set allowed the Bobcats to cruise to a 25-16 win in the final set.

Monroe's four kills paced the Norse.  She also tallied two assisted blocks.  Caylor had 12 assists.  Jandt finished with 16 digs while Allan had 11.

The Norse return to action on Friday with a trip to Macomb Community College.  They will then finish up the weekend with a Saturday afternoon matchup with Henry Ford College.
