Norse Unable to Overcome Slow Start

PORT HURON, MI – The Bay College Norse Volleyball Team (11-16, 3-7) opened postseason play on Thursday evening at the 2022 NJCAA Division II Great Lakes District B Tournament.  A sluggish start to the evening became too much for the Norse to overcome as they fell in three straight sets to Lake Michigan College (28-11, 10-2) by scores of 25-8, 25-17, and 25-20.

Lake Michigan came out hot and did not give Bay a chance to find their footing.  The Norse committed seven attacking errors and had just two kills for a negative attack percentage.  The set quickly got out-of-hand with the number 1 seed from the MCCAA West claiming a 20-2 lead at one point.  The Norse managed to rally at the end, but found themselves in a case of too little, too late, as they got blown out in the first set.

The group from Bay were not deterred as they managed to show fight in the second set.  Unfortunately, they still lost the battle at the net, as eight attack errors piled up, once again giving them a negative attack percentage.  The Norse also were credited with two blocking errors, and they ended up in a 2-0 hole.

The third set showed the potential of the Norse, as they proved they belonged.  A positive attack percentage for the first time in the day kept them within reach of a win.  Amber Caylor (FR, Wausaukee, WI) helped Bay make a run with four service aces, while Leah Allan (FR, Oconto, WI) added two more.  Although the Norse proved they could challenge Lake Michigan, they were not able to force a fourth set.

Riley Johnson (FR, Chatham, MI) had a solid outing, picking up six kills for Bay.  Tori Jandt (FR, Peshtigo, WI) led the Norse with 16 digs, while Allan added ten.  Caylor ended up with 15 assists in the match.

The Norse now find themselves on the brink of elimination.  They will go on to face Oakland Community College Friday morning at 11 am.  Oakland lost in three straight sets to Muskegon Community College at the same time Bay played their match.  The winner of tomorrow's match will advance to play at 3 pm, while the loser will see their season come to an end.
