Matt Gregory Steps Down as Head Women's Basketball Coach

Matt Gregory

ESCANABA, MI – The Bay College Athletic Department has announced that Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Gregory has resigned from his position.

"It is with mixed feelings that I will be resigning from my position as Head Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director," said Gregory.  "I would like to thank the Bay College administration for the opportunity to lead the Women's Basketball program for the past 3 seasons. It has been a joy working with so many high character Student-Athletes those past years, as well as the first 3 years during my time as an Assistant Men's Coach. I would also like to thank the community for all their support. As this chapter closes and new one opens, I cherish all the special memories and relationships during my time here as a Norse. I wish the best for all the programs, as they move towards continued success."

Coach Gregory has been with Norse Athletics since it was re-introduced to Bay College in 2017.  For the first three seasons he was an assistant coach with the Men's Basketball Program and helped Matt Johnson lead the Norse to a 61-27 record.

During the 2019-2020 season Gregory began working with the Women's Basketball Program as well, serving as an assistant for both programs.  Coach Gregory was named the interim head coach for the final five games of the season, ending his tenure with the Men's Program, and finishing the season with the women with a 3-2 record over the final stretch.
With the interim tag removed the Norse looked to have momentum on their side heading into the postseason in 2020-2021.  Bay won their last two regular season games in a shortened season format, but fell in the Region 13 Sub-Region Tournament to Rochester Community and Technical College.

In his second season at the helm the Norse got off to a strong start.  Gregory guided Bay to a four-game win streak and a 5-3 record in November, showing promise.  The Norse bowed out in the first round of the Regional Tournament however, this time with a loss to Dakota College at Bottineau.

Injuries plagued the Norse in the 2022-2023 campaign often causing the team to play shorthanded.  The team showed perseverance and battled through adversity.  In Bay's first year of being in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Region 12, the Norse accepted a bid to compete in the NJCAA Great Lakes District Tournament.

Matt Gregory departs Bay College with a 26-51 career record.

"I would like to thank Coach Gregory for his hard work and dedication to Bay College and our student-athletes during his time as both an assistant and head coach," said Athletic Director Matt Johnson.  "He helped build a strong foundation for both the men's and women's basketball programs. I wish him all the best."

Bay College will conduct an immediate national search for the next Norse women's basketball coach.  Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
