Norse Finish Sweep of Samsons

Norse Finish Sweep of Samsons

ESCANABA, MI - The Bay Norse Softball Team (18-6) completed a season sweep of the Gogebic Community College Samsons (2-23) on Saturday afternoon.  The Norse would win 16-0 and 12-3.

GAME 1 - BAY COLLEGE - 16, GOGEBIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE - 0

Fifteen hits and six Samson errors would allow the Norse to score in every inning, allowing them to cruise to victory.

Rhiley Hubert (SO, Rapid River, MI) was fantastic in the circle.  She pitched a complete game, one-hit, shutout, striking out six and walking no one.  Her outing would allow the Norse offense to continue to it's dominate performance over Gogebic, and cruise to a win.

Kaitlyn Hardwick (FR, Gladstone, MI) would smack two doubles and drive in six runs in the contest.  Richelle Vandeville (FR, Rapid River, MI) was three for four with four RBI, while Emily Bruntjens (SO, Escanaba, MI) collected four hits in five at bats, driving in two and scoring three times.  Aubree Saunders (SO, Escanaba, MI) went two for four with one RBI and one run scored.

Sarah Trudgeon (FR, Bessemer, MI) took the loss.  Ten of the 16 runs were earned.  She would walk just four and strike out one.  She was responsible for the team's only hit, a double in the first inning.

GAME 2 - BAY COLLEGE - 12, GOGEBIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE - 3

Beth Gannigan (FR, Coleman, WI) hit a two RBI triple in the second and drive in five RBI in the game, leading the Norse to decisive game four victory.

Bay would do its damage early, scoring three in the first, four in the second, and five in the third inning.  Eight different Norse hitters would combine to collect ten hits for the home team.  Bruntjens was the only other player to have a multi-hit game, finishing two for four with two runs scored.

The Samson pitching staff would deal out six walks, and their defense would commit six errors to aid the Bay attack.  A Norse error in the third would finally get Gogebic on the board, and cut the score to 7-2, but the five-run bottom of the third would put the game out of reach.

Lexi Winling (FR, Gladstone, MI) picked up the win, striking out eight, and giving up four hits, two earned runs, and walking two.

Bay College is scheduled to host Finlandia University on Monday.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Finaldia, but was moved to Escanaba due to field conditions.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
