Norse Tame the Timberwolves

Lamar Grayson about to release a shot in the lane, a defender bearing down on him from behind

ESCANABA, MI – The Norse Men's Basketball Team (12-4, 2-0) picked up their second conference win in as many attempts, rolling to a 98-62 win over the North Central Michigan College Timberwolves (3-10, 0-2).

Bay fed off the energy of a robust crowd as they hosted High School Appreciation Night that included many local high school basketball teams in attendance.  An 11-2 run to start the game set the tone early for the home team.

The Timberwolves responded and pulled to within one, but Bay's defense frustrated the NCMC attack from there.  The visitors did not score a field goal over the next five minutes allowing Bay to go on an 18-2 run to open up a lead.  The scoring outburst was triggered by Lamar Grayson (SO, Richfield, MN) getting hot.  His ten points in a stretch of two minutes and thirty seconds sparked offense that didn't seem to slow down for the rest of the night.

Genesis Kemp (FR, Grand Rapids, MI) made his presence known, scoring six points in the span of four Bay possessions, which helped Bay stretch out to a 20-point lead.  The home team took a 52-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Norse never left any doubt in the second half and continued to build a lead.  They shot 54.7% for the game, hit on five of 16 from three-point range, and got to the free throw line 26 times, converting 23 of those attempts.  Bay led the rebounding battle 43-34.

North Central Michigan shot a respectable 35.4% from the field but hit on just seven of 26 from behind the arc.  They got to the charity stripe just ten times, making seven.

All of that led to a decisive 36-point victory for the homestanding Norse.

Grayson was fantastic in his efforts, going 11 of 13 from the field.  He hit on his only three-point attempt and on all three of his free throw attempts, and had four rebounds and three assists on his way to 26 points.

Kemp was successful on all eight of his free throw attempts and ended with 17 points and grabbed four rebounds.  Jaylen Flaniken (SO, Troy, MI) put up 13 points and four rebounds.

Dai'Monte Rembert (FR, Gary, IN) led the Timberwolves with 12 points.  Julius Smith (FR, Joliet, IL) had 11 points and four rebounds, while Josh Adim (FR, Joliet, IL) added ten points.

The Norse play host to Muskegon Community College on Saturday, who is 7-9 overall and 1-1 in conference.  The Jayhawks fought back from a 13-point halftime deficit on Wednesday night only to fall by four points to Delta College.  The game on Saturday is scheduled for a 3 pm start.
