Bay Wins Third Straight

Jocquez Overstreet dribbles to the corner as a defender looks on

ALPENA, MI – The Bay College Norse Men's Basketball Team (15-8) led for nearly the entire game as they took down a tough Alpena Community College Lumberjack (2-17) on the road by a final score of 75-63.

After the Norse took the first lead of the game, Alpena grabbed their only lead of the game off of a James Williams (FR, Flint, MI) three-pointer.  Bay College took control with a 12-2 run.  Justin Nelson (FR, Iron River, MI) hit a pair of baskets, including a dunk, and Jacquez Overstreet (FR, Appleton, WI) knocked down a pair of threes in that run.

Bay used a series of small runs to build their lead in the first half.  Their offense remained efficient as they shot 45.2% from the floor in the first half, while Alpena hit just 25% of their shots.

The Norse held a 34-21 lead at halftime.

Despite a much-improved effort on the offensive end by Alpena, they would never close the gap to below double-digits.  The Norse led by as many as 18 in the early going of the second half.

The Lumberjacks were able to make things interesting in the final minutes of the game.  Quay Humphries (SO, Swartz Creek, MI) hit a shot from behind the arc with just under two minutes, making the score 71-61 in favor of the Norse.

Alpena tried to extend the game from there, but the Norse answered the call, going four of five from free throw to close out the game, picking up the 12-point victory.

The Norse continued their strong shooting effort and finished with a 45.9% field goal percentage, despite hitting just three of 18 from behind the arc.  Alpena picked up the pace and shot 33.8% for the game, and connected on nine of 34 attempts from deep.

Bay's big advantages came from the charity stripe as they were awarded 18 free throws and hit 16 of them.  The Lumberjacks were just two of two from the stripe.  Bay also won the rebounding battle, grabbing 40 while Alpena had 30 rebounds.

Lamar Grayson (FR, Richfield, MN) had a good afternoon and recorded a double-double.  He was six of six from free throw and ended with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Overstreet also had 14 points and hit two of three from three-point.  Jaylen Flaniken (FR, Troy, MI) had 12 points and five rebounds, while Tre Burris (FR, Milwaukee, WI) and Aloung Kang (SO, Apple Valley, MN) had ten points apiece.  Kang grabbed six rebounds.

The Lumberjacks were led by Cleveland Baker (SO, Topinabee, MI) who had 15 points.  Chris DeRocher (SO, Ossineke, MI) ended his day with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Williams added ten points.  Brenden Miller (FR, Linden, MI) had 11 rebounds.

The Norse will host Gogebic Community College on Wednesday in what is currently their last scheduled home game of the regular season.  The Region 13 and U.P. rivalry will tip at 6 pm.  Bay won the first matchup of the season between these two by a final score of 57-52.
