Norse Sweep the Weekend

Jaylen Flaniken dribbles into the lane to take a shot

IRONWOOD, MI – The Bay College Men's Basketball Team (8-1) got back to their winning ways as they swept a pair of games at the Lindquist Classic hosted by Gogebic Community College.  On Friday they cruised to victory over Vermilion Community College (0-6) by a final score of 97-65.  Bay followed that up with an equally impressive win on Sunday, beating Leech Lake Tribal College by a final of 91-75.

A 19-4 run by the Norse midway through the first half broke the game open on Saturday against the Ironmen.  Bay took a 43-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Another big run to start the second half blew the game open.  A 23-4 put the game away, allowing Bay to cruise to victory.

The Norse shot the ball exceptionally well on the day, hitting 64.1% from the field.  They also connected on ten of 19 from behind the three-point arc.

Jaylen Flaniken (FR, Troy, MI) led the Norse with 16 points and five rebounds.  Dewayne Thompson (FR, St. Paul, MN) added 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Carter Hudson (FR, Escanaba, MI) also had 14 points, while Tre Burris (FR, Milwaukee, WI) ended with 12 points and eight rebounds.

On Sunday the Norse were forced to survive a shooting barrage from Leech Lake as they let loose 34 shots from behind the three-point arc.  The Norse found themselves in a tight battle, leading by just one point at half.

Leech Lake took a brief lead in the second half, but the Norse would respond.  A 13-5 stretch in favor of Bay gave them a little separation with the Norse leading by seven.

Bay slowly built the lead and finished with a flurry, ending the game with a 16-point victory.

Flaniken paced the Norse for a second day in a row, this time he ended up with 32 points on 11 of 19 shooting.  Jaylen hit six three-pointers and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Isaiah Kennedy (FR, Prince George County, MD) contributed 15 points off the bench, while Marcus Harris (SO, Brimley, MI) connected on four threes on his way to 14 points and four assists.

Thompson also ended his game with a double-double ending with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Justin Nelson (FR, Iron River, MI) grabbed ten rebounds.

The Norse are on the road next weekend as they will go to Macomb Community College on Friday evening.  That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.  On Saturday they will visit Oakland Community College for a 3 pm tip.
