Cavaliers Run Away From Norse

Ashton Janke putting up a shot on the right side of the rim, a defender is trying to block his attempt

KANKAKEE, IL – The Norse Men's Basketball Team (1-9) lost for the second straight day in disappointing fashion, getting blown out on the road by the Kankakee Community College Cavaliers (6-4) by a final score of 94-65 on Sunday afternoon.

The Norse clung to an early lead as a three-pointer by Matt Wagner (SO, Marinette, WI) put them up 10-6, and a Jaden Janke (FR, Dollar Bay, MI) hit a shot from behind the arc to put them up 13-11 a few minutes later.

From there it was downhill.  The Cavaliers got hot and started hitting some deep balls of their own.  They also started pressuring the Norse passing lanes, creating turnovers that led to fast break dunk opportunities.  A 19-5 Kankakee run gave the home team the lead for good.

The Norse tried to keep pace by using the long ball.  They knocked down eight three's in the first half.  Four came from Wagner, and Ashton Janke (SO, Dollar Bay, MI) chipped in two more, but Bay found themselves down 50-32 at the half.

Kankakee continued their barrage into the second half.  They would knock down 12 three-point attempts in the game, as they would control it throughout, and never allow their lead to sink lower than double digits.

The Norse were able to put some pressure on the Cavaliers in the second half, by getting their way to the free throw line 17 times in the second half.  They were able to overcome their recent and inexplicable free throw woes by going 15 of 19 from the charity strip in the game.

In the end, the Cavaliers were just too much for the Norse, taking a 29-point victory at home.

The Norse were paced by Wagner who hit four three-pointers in the first half.  He ended up with 19 points.  Chris Dobessi (SO, Detroit, MI) hit six of seven free throws in the second half to score 14 points, while Ashton Janke's three three's helped him score 14 as well.

Thirteen different players ended up making tallies in the scoring column for Kankakee.  Brian Hernandez (SO, Chicago, IL) scored all 13 of his points in the first half, including three three-pointers.  Dexter Shouse Jr. (FR, Terre Haute, IN) did all of his scoring in the second half, and he also knocked down three from behind the arc.  Christian Roberts (SO, Chicago, IL) score 12 points, while Damari Nixon (SO, Chicago, IL) and Ahmed Mahmoud (SO, Louisville, KY) both added ten points.

The Norse will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening as they play host to the Finlandia University Lions.  That game will start at 7 pm.
