Norse Stumble on Spring Trip

Jared Crow dives back to the bag, just beating a sliding runner to first for the out

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Bay College Baseball Team (1-8) saw their offense cool off and dropped their final five games of the spring trip to extend their losing streak to seven straight.

On Monday Penn State New Kensington (2-4) scored single runs in the first five innings.  Bay was able to keep pace early on.  Grant Craft (SO, Canberra, Australia) drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the second with a single to left.  Jared Crow (SO, Gladstone, MI) picked up two RBI in the fourth with a flyball single to right.  Sam Williams' (FR, Oxford, MI) leadoff, solo homerun in the fifth made it 5-4 in favor of PSU New Kensington.

The Norse saw the game get out of reach in the seventh as they surrendered five runs in the frame.  Bay ended up losing by a final of 10-4.

Williams picked up two hits in his four at bats.

Matt Bush (SO, Sault Ste. Marie, MI) took the loss, despite a solid performance on the mound.  In six innings he gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and three walks.  He struck out one batter.

On Tuesday Lackawanna College (6-4) jumped on the Norse with an 11-run first inning, putting the game away early.  They collected 12 hits and used four walks and two Norse errors to score 15 runs in the game.

Dalton Graham (SO, Sault Ste. Marie, MI) collected two hits in four at bats, driving in a run.

Crow took the loss in a rough outing for his first start of the year.

After an off day and a morning rain out, the Norse were rescheduled and picked up a game against a very good Northampton Community College (8-2) Team.

Patrick Flynn (FR, Easton, PA) took over the game.  He ended up throwing a two-hit complete game shutout for the Spartans, striking out ten and walking five.

Meanwhile five errors would cost the Norse and allow Northampton to run away with the game.  A booming two run home run from David Baltrusaitis (FR, Tunkhannock, PA) ended the game in the sixth, as the Spartans won by a final score of 10-0.

Austin Burnside (FR, Crivitz, WI) was the losing pitcher.  He went five innings and gave up six hits, eight runs, four earned, and walked four.

The Norse offense sputtered again on Friday morning as Westmoreland Community College (1-4) blanked Bay by a final of 7-0.

The Norse mustered just five hits in the contest and struck out eight times.

Perhaps the more alarming issue is the eight defensive errors for Bay College which led to every run being unearned for Westmoreland.  Nick Goebert (SO, Werl, Germany) took the loss despite giving up just one hit, walking four, and striking out eight.  Bush pitched the final two and gave up two hits and struck out four.

Dylan Kregelka (FR, Seffner, FL) and Graham each had two for three games.

The trip concluded with Penn State Hazleton (2-7) avenging a loss to the Norse from earlier in the week.

PSU Hazleton abused Norse pitching to the tune of 16 hits, bringing 11 runs to the plate.  Bay's offense could not keep pace, scoring just two runs on six hits.

Graham took the loss for Bay, even though five of the eight runs he gave up were unearned.  He did surrender ten hits, but walked no one and struck out two.

The Norse will look to get back on track on Friday.  They will face Morton College at DuPage Medical Group Field in Joliet, IL.  That doubleheader is scheduled for a 4 pm first pitch.  The weekend will continue with a four game series at McHenry County College on Saturday and Sunday.
