FORT PIERCE, FL - The Bay Norse Baseball Team (3-7-1) finished their spring break trip with an 11-0 win over the Western Connecticut State Colonials JV team on Friday morning.
Tyler Skufca (SO, Escanaba, MI) earned the first ever complete game shutout in Bay College baseball history with his effort on the mound. Tyler would give up just four hits, hit two batters, and walk no one, while striking out six in just 105 pitches over nine innings of work.
The Norse offense would come alive as well. Flynn Morrison (FR, Melbourne, MI) drove in the first run with a single to right. Then in the fourth, back-to-back doubles would set up runners on second and third. Lucas Weinert (FR, Gladstone, MI) would follow that up with a one out single to drive in a run, and the Norse would complete a double steal to score their third run.
After a sacrifice fly in the fifth, the Norse would break the game open in the sixth. Oliver Dunn (FR, Melbourne, Australia) launched a triple to right to plate two. Mark Zhang (FR, Canberra, Australia) singled him home in the very next at bat. With two outs Ben Schwalbach (SO, Gladstone, MI) doubled to center, driving in a run, and he would score on a single from Kyler Moir (FR, Hillman, MI). The Norse would hold a 9-0 lead after six innings of play.
Bay would round out their scoring in the seventh. Morrison doubled to left to drive in Dunn. Schwalbach followed that up with a triple to right center to knock in Morrison. From that point on West Conn would get just one more baserunner as the Norse would close out the game, and the spring break trip with an 11-0 win.
Moir finished the game three for three with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Weinert collected two hits in five at bats with a stolen base and an RBI. Morrison was two for five with two RBI, while Schwalbach had a two for four day with two RBI, two runs scored, a double, and a triple.
"Tyler Skufca threw one heck of a game today. He was in control throughout and never really got in trouble," said Head Baseball Coach Mike Pankow. "Our bats finally came around and we got some key hits with runners on today. That is definitely something we were missing throughout the week, so it was great to end on a high note."
Bay is scheduled to travel to Rockford, IL next weekend. They will visit Rock Valley College on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm. On Saturday they will conclude the four game series with a second doubleheader starting at noon. On Sunday the Norse will take on Milwaukee Area Technical College with a doubleheader starting at noon.
