Bay Bats Go Silent

Mason Korhonen winding up for a pitch

VERO BEACH, FL - The Bay Norse Baseball Team (1-7) would drop a doubleheader to the Eastern Gateway Community College Gators (3-4) by final scores of 13-1 and 11-3.

GAME 1 - EASTERN GATEWAY - 13, BAY COLLEGE - 1

Four Bay College pitchers would combine to walk ten batters and give up ten hits, allowing the Gators to build an insurmountable lead.  The Gator offense was highlighted by a long homerun by Zach Johnson to left.  The score would stand at just 3-0 after three, but a four run fourth, and a five run fifth would put the game out of reach quickly.

Bay's lone run would come in the bottom of the fifth.  Owen Hanson (FR, Gladstone, MI) would get hit by a pitch and be driven home by Tyler Skufca (SO, Escanaba, MI).  The Norse would get just five hits in the game.

Skufca ended the game three for three with an RBI and a double.  Dane VanDenHeuvel (FR, Norway, MI) took the loss on the mound.  He gave up seven runs, though just three of them were earned.

GAME 2 - EASTERN GATEWAY - 11, BAY COLLEGE - 3

The Norse would grab the lead in the first, taking advantage of a Gator error to plate one, and getting an RBI single from Ty Ziegler (FR, Hortonville, WI) to plate a second.  Eastern Gateway would cut that lead in half in the bottom half, scoring a run on a bases loaded walk.

The Gators would take the lead in the bottom of the third.  Noah Laster would lead off with a double and later score on a double by Jeremiah Papa.  Papa would score on a sacrifice fly to center, and the Gators would lead 3-2.

Bay would answer in the fifth.  With two outs Skufca and Oliver Dunn (FR, Melbourne, Australia) would draw walks.  Skufca would score on a Justin Popelka single.  Free bases would haunt the Norse again as the Gators would draw three of them to start the bottom of the sixth.  It looked as though Bay might be able to get out of the jam until Andrew Wess hit a double into the left field corner, plating two runs.  Three Norse errors in the sixth would open the floodgates, as the Gators would score six runs and put the game away.

Bay College would muster just two hits in the contest.  Owen Hanson would take the loss on the mound, giving up two runs and four walks in just two thirds of an inning.  Alfredo Cruz would pick up the win, tossing a scoreless inning in relief.

Bay continues the spring trip with two games on Thursday.  They will have a rematch with Earlham JV at 1:30 pm.  On Tuesday those two teams squared off and Earlham came from behind and won the game by a final of 5-4 in ten innings.  The Norse will then take on the Etobicoke Rangers at 4:30 pm.
