Norse Drop Opener

Norse Drop Opener

VERO BEACH, FL - The Bay College Norse Baseball Team (0-2) opened their season playing in the stadium at Historic Dodgertown.  They would drop a doubleheader to the Hagerstown Community College (10-3) by final scores of 6-3 and 15-8.

GAME 1 - HCC - 6, BAY COLLEGE - 3

Nate Cotton (SO, Nassau, NY) and Austin Moser (SO, Hagerstown, MD) drove in runs in the first and a pair of singles in the second would set up a first and third situation and the Hawks would execute a double steal to go up by three runs.

Bay would finally answer back in the sixth inning.  With two outs the Norse would put together a threat.  Ty Ziegler (FR, Hortonville, WI) would tally the third consecutive hit to drive in the first run of the program.  Bay would strand two however, and trail 3-1.

Hagerstown loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.  Facing the nine hitter, it looked as though Bay had a way out of the inning.  Enrique Morales (SO, Ridgewood, NY) would drive a fastball to right center that ended up as a bases clearing triple.

Bay threatened in the top of the seventh, plating runs on a Tyler Skufca (SO, Escanaba, MI) double to left and a Mark Zhang (FR, Canberra, Australia) sacrifice fly, but the comeback effort would fall short.

Justin Popelka (SO, Escanaba, MI) would be tagged with the loss for the Norse, going six innings and giving up six earned runs on nine hits, three walks, while striking out five.

Oliver Dunn (FR, Melbourne, Australia) ended the game going two for four with a double.

GAME 2 - HCC - 15, BAY COLLEGE - 8

Defensive miscues plagued the Norse in the nightcap, as it would put them in a hole early.  Hagerstown would bat around and put up four runs on three hits, taking advantage of two errors, two walks, and hit by pitch.  Bay answered back in the bottom half, as Flynn Morrison (FR, Melbourne, Australia) doubled to right field to drive in two.

The Hawks would have an immediate answer as Cotton would lead off the second inning with a booming homerun to left.  After loading the bases, the Norse would get off the hook, giving up just one run on a sacrifice fly.

Bay would answer back with three hits in the bottom of the second.  An Alex Morehouse (FR, Sugar Island, MI) would be the hit that drove in a run, and Bay would trail 6-3.

The two teams would trade runs in the third, with the Norse taking advantage of a Zhang double.  The Hawks would answer back with a run again, and Bay would trail by four in the fourth.

The Norse would load the bases with no one out, but a comebacker to the pitcher would get a force out at the plate.  After a fielder's choice plated one run, Hagerstown looked to try and get out of the inning with minimal damage.  Two consecutive walks and an error would send three more runs to the plate, tying the game heading into the fifth.

The game would remain tied until the top of the sixth, and errors would doom the Norse again.  Four errors would contribute to a seven run inning for the Hawks, which would bury Bay College.  Hagerstown would collect four hits in the inning, and the deficit would prove to be too much for the Norse.

Morehouse and Dane VanDenHeuvel (FR, Norway, MI) finished the game two for four.  Connor Olson (FR, Washburn, WI) would be saddled with the loss in relief.

Cotton ended the game four for six for the Hawks with four RBI.

The Norse will play Cairn University tomorrow evening in Fort Pierce, FL.  That game is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
