Prior to arriving at Bay, Johnson was the assistant men’s basketball coach and head men’s and women’s golf coach at Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota. In his one season at Saint Mary’s, Johnson coached a 1,000 point scorer, and recruited an incoming class that, as freshmen, won more games than any SMU team in 6 season.

Prior to his time at Saint Mary’s, Johnson was the men’s basketball coach at Hibbing Community College, in Hibbing, Minnesota. Johnson was an assistant coach for one season (2006-07), before being named the head men’s coach in 2007. Johnson led the Cardinals for seven seasons (2007-2014). In his seven seasons at the helm, Johnson’s teams had a record of 96-100, a big improvement over the 43-111 record in the six seasons prior to his arrival. While competing in the difficult Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC), considered one of the premier NJCAA DIII conferences in the country, Johnson guided his teams to a 51-44 in record. Johnson's teams qualified for the 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 MCAC Conference and NJCAA Region XIII Tournament, knocked off the #2 and #5 teams in the nation, had 14 All-MCAC performers and 5 NJCAA All-Region XIII players, and had 22 student-athletes who moved on to 4 year schools, 15 on athletic scholarships.

Johnson’s coaching career began as an assistant women’s coach at Macalester College, in St. Paul, Minnesota (2005-2006).

Johnson played college basketball at Northland College and Finlandia University and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2004.

Johnson and his wife, Kate, reside in Gladstone. They have two children, Drake (16) and Lillie (14).
