Norse Student-Athletes Earn Post Season Academic Awards

ESCANABA, MI - Bay College Athletics and the NJCAA National Office recently announced post season academic awards and the Dean's List for the 2018-2019 season.  Eleven student-athletes made the NJCAA All-Academic Teams, four were named to the NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association All-Scholar Team, and sixteen student-athletes were named to the Bay College Dean's List.

Norse Athletic Director, Matt Johnson talked about the academic success of Bay's student-athletes.  "It takes incredible focus and drive to be able to juggle all that comes with being a student-athlete. The success that these young men and women achieved in the classroom is incredible, they embody all that a student-athlete should strive to be.  They are great ambassadors for Bay College and the Norse Athletic Department!"

The NJCAA annually names All-Academic teams.  The criteria for First Team All-Academic honors is a 4.0 grade point average.  Second Team honors are awarded to student-athletes with a 3.80-3.99 GPA, while Third Team All-Academic Team members achieve a GPA between 3.60 and 3.79.  This year set a record for the NJCAA as 6,656 student-athletes were named to an All-Academic Team.

Bay College had two student-athletes that were named to the All-Academic First Team.  Logan Bailey (FR, Baseball) and Mark Zhang (FR, Baseball) were able to achieve a 4.0 grade point average.  Four student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Second Team, including: Logan Hardwick (FR, Basketball), Tyler Skufca (SO, Baseball), Dane VanDenHeuvel (FR, Baseball) and Lexi Winling (SO, Softball).   The NJCAA All-Academic Third Team featured five Norse athletes: Kaitlyn Hardwick (FR, Women's Basketball, Softball), Rhiley Hubert (SO, Softball), Emily LaFave (SO, Softball), Jerrika McAlpine (SO, Softball), and Haley Trudell (FR, Women's Basketball).

The NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association selects a Scholar Athlete Team annually.  This season the Norse were represented by Katy Combs, Steven Magnuson, Jody Peters, and Lauren Peters.  The Cross Country team also finished in the top 20 in the nation with a 3.27 team grade point average.

Each semester Bay College announces students that have achieved academic excellence.  The criteria for students to be selected to the Dean's List include earning a 3.50 grade point average (out of a possible 4.00) and completing 12 or more credit hours of college-level classes for the semester.

Three student-athletes achieved a 4.00 grade point average in the 2019 Winter Semester.  Those students are: Logan Bailey (FR, Baseball), Dane VanDenHeuvel (FR, Baseball), and Mark Zhang (FR, Baseball).

Thirteen student-athletes also made the Dean's List with a 3.50 grade point average or higher.  Those students are: Christian Alexander (FR, Basketball), Cade Contreras (FR, Men's Basketball), Kaitlyn Hardwick (FR, Women's Basketball, Softball), Logan Hardwick (FR, Basketball), Rhiley Hubert (SO, Softball), Jerrika McAlpine (SO, Softball), Alex Morehouse (FR, Baseball), Tyler Skufca (SO, Men's Baseball), Haley Trudell (FR, Women's Basketball), Paige Welch (SO, Women's Basketball), Lexi Winling (SO, Softball), and James Young (FR, Men's Cross Country).
